Changing the oil in the gearbox

When indicating the optimal frequency of oil change in the engine, manufacturers often forget to do the same for the transmission.
In fact, its replacement is also necessary – the gearbox is subjected to serious stress, and the oil in it performs three functions at once:
➡ protects parts from oxidation and prevents the spread of corrosion;
➡ lubricates the gears, making them run smoother;
➡ cools down the node.
Experts recommend changing the oil in the gearbox after 100,000 kilometers (60,000 miles) of mileage or every 7 years of car operation (depending on which event occurs first).
If the Your vehicle is subjected to heavy loads or operated in adverse conditions, it is better to play it safe and do it after 60-70 thousand km (35-44 thousand miles) of mileage.
The technology for changing oil in a gearbox (both automatic and mechanical), a variator, a gearbox, a transfer case is different from the technology for changing oil in an engine. And these fluids themselves are different in these nodes of the car.
Moreover, the composition of oil for an automatic transmission is different from that for a manual transmission, and they cannot be interchanged.

Changing the oil in the engine

Changing the oil in the engine is one of the key service procedures. Its periodicity is regulated by the vehicle manufacturer and, as a rule, is 10,000 km (60,000 miles) or a one year of operation. However, depending on the driving style and conditions of operation of the vehicle, these terms can be shorter.

Change the oil every 6-7 thousand km (3-4 thousand miles), if:

➖ You drive in an “aggressive”, sporty style;
➖ You regularly transport cargo;
➖ You often drive short distances, stand in traffic jams a lot, and the engine has to idle;
➖ You move mainly on bad roads, dirt or off-road;
➖ You save on fuel quality.
It is quite difficult to make an engine oil change competently and safely without sufficient experience and equipment. In addition, when changing the oil, it is necessary to replace the oil filters.
Another point: you need to select the necessary oil specifically for the engine of your vehicle, because the properties of a certain composition may be suitable for a gearbox, variator, gearbox, transfer case, but categorically not suitable for the engine.

Replacement of liquids

For the normal operation of all components of the vehicle, it is necessary to timely replace not only the oil in the engine and transmission, but also other fluids: brake fluid, antifreeze and power steering fluid.

How often this should be done depends on the model of your vehicle and its operating conditions.
In any case, the level of all liquids should be measured regularly.
✅ Replacement of brake fluid — every 1.5-2 years, regardless of mileage. If you ignore this recommendation, you can get rid of the entire braking system. Adding new fluid without removing the old one will not help.
✅ Coolant – the frequency of its replacement is determined by what type of fluid is used. The coolant needs to be replaced every 2 or 3-5 years, depending on the type and manufacturer of the coolant.
✅ Power steering fluid – according to the regulations, a complete replacement is made after 80 thousand kilometers (50,000 miles), but with regular measurement of the level, its condition must be monitored.
If the liquid is dark, dirty in color or has a burning smell, it requires immediate replacement, and the system needs to be cleaned of the expansion tank.

Replacement of brake pads and discs

The braking system “catches” almost all the load on the car. Pads and discs are some of the most heavily used items.
The theoretical terms for replacing brake pads and discs are indicated in the service book. But in practice, everything depends on the degree of actual wear and tear. It, in turn, is influenced by many factors: driving style, condition of the road surface, season, etc.
On average, discs begin to require attention after 80,000 km (50,000 miles) of mileage, but the pads are less stable, their resource is exhausted after 12-17 thousand km (7,500-10,000 miles).
First signs of problems:
▶ screeching when braking;
▶ the brake pedal is very easy to press;
▶ lengthening the braking distance;
▶ increased consumption of brake fluid.
Brake discs fail according to a similar pattern: noises in the wheel area, drifts during braking, changes in the braking distance itself and fluid consumption.
It is important to keep in mind that replacement of brake system parts is carried out exclusively in pairs on one axle.
